The Top 5 Pet Yoga Poses for Kids to Energize and Relax After School

After school, kids often need an outlet to release energy and relax. Yoga is a wonderful way to help them unwind while staying active, and pet-themed yoga poses make it even more fun! Pet yoga is an engaging way for kids to move, stretch, and connect with their bodies—all while pretending to be their favorite animals.

As a kids yoga instructor, I’ve seen how poses like the dog, cat, goldfish, turtle, and rabbit bring big smiles and lots of giggles while helping kids stay strong and focused. Here’s a guide to the top 5 pet yoga poses for children, complete with a downloadable PDF for easy practice at home.

1. Dog Pose (Downward-Facing Dog)

Dog pose is a favorite among kids because it feels playful and gives a great stretch to the whole body.

How to Do It:

Start on hands and knees, spread your fingers wide, tuck your toes, and lift your hips toward the sky. Let your head hang down and pretend you’re a happy puppy!

Benefits:

Strengthens the arms and legs, stretches the back, and energizes the body.

2. Cat Pose

Cat pose is a great way for kids to stretch their spines and practice mindfulness while pretending to be a curious kitty.

How to Do It:

Start on hands and knees. Round your back toward the ceiling, tuck your chin to your chest, and imagine you’re a cat stretching after a nap. Release and repeat.

Benefits:

Improves flexibility, relieves tension, and promotes calmness.

3. Goldfish Pose

Goldfish pose is simple and adds a bit of sparkle to yoga time.

How to Do It:

Lie on your back with your arms at your sides. Slide your hands under your hips, lift your chest slightly, and tilt your head back, pretending to swim like a shiny goldfish.

Benefits:

Opens the chest, improves breathing, and encourages focus.

4. Turtle Pose

Turtle pose is perfect for kids who love quiet, calming movements.

How to Do It:

Sit with your legs apart. Bend forward and reach your arms under your knees. Rest your head and imagine you’re hiding inside your turtle shell.

Benefits:

Improves hip flexibility, stretches the back, and helps with relaxation.

5. Rabbit Pose

Rabbit pose is a calming way to end a yoga session, helping kids wind down after all the fun.

How to Do It:

Begin in a kneeling position. Lower your head to the mat and stretch your arms behind you, imagining you’re a bunny in its burrow.

Benefits:

Stretches the neck and back while promoting mindfulness and relaxation.
